PAP flags are up!

Flags spotted in Toa Payoh, next to the tree temple

Flags spotted at the residential area along Serangoon Road

I was in Toa Payoh and there you go, the flags were there. I saw the flags again on my way home along Serangoon Road (near NEX).

Now, under the Parliamentary Elections Act, the election campaigning period begins only after the Writ of Election has been issued. Since the Writ of Election has not been issued, is it safe to say that the PAP has violated the Act?

A little bit of research sent me to Chapter 218 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, with regards to election advertising. At the very beginning of Chapter 218, this was mentioned:

Definitions
2.  In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires —

“banner” means any election advertising that is a flag, bunting, ensign or standard;

“campaign period” , in relation to an election, means the period —

(a) beginning with the closure of the place of nomination on nomination day after the election is adjourned under section 34(1)(a), as the case may be, of the Act to enable a poll to be taken in accordance with the Act; and

(b) ending with the start of the eve of polling day of that election;

With regards to this issue, I have written to the Elections Department for clarification and I hope that they will reply soon.

If the reply from the Elections Department clarifies that the PAP did not in any way violate the Act as mentioned above, then the opposition parties here can also start to put up their party flags as well. It is just fair isn’t it?

Will update this blog post when they reply.

I have sent the elections dept an email on Friday evening (Gd Friday) and have yet gotten a reply. Let’s see if they do so by Wednesday…🙂 I am hoping that they do.
